1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible
The Pontiac Firebird was an American muscle car produced by Pontiac from 1967 to 2002. It was designed to compete directly with the Ford Mustang and was introduced on February 23, 1967. This was the same year the Chevrolet Camaro was released, which shared the same platform, marking the beginning of an iconic rivalry in the pony car market.
First Generation (1967–1969)
The first-generation Firebird featured the distinctive “Coke bottle” styling, which it shared with its sibling, the Chevrolet Camaro. A defining feature of the Firebird was its integrated bumpers, giving it a more streamlined look compared to the Camaro. The rear “slit” taillights were inspired by the 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO. The Firebird was available in both two-door hardtop and convertible body styles through the 1969 model year. Originally intended as a “consolation prize” for Pontiac, which had hoped to build a two-seat sports car based on its Banshee concept car, the Firebird was introduced after GM decided against competing with Chevrolet’s Corvette. Instead, Pontiac shared the F-body platform with Chevrolet, giving them their own entry into the pony car segment.
